Success Stories – Paddy the Greyhound finds his forever home

In these uncertain times surrounding the Covid-19 virus and the effect it is having on all of us, we will be happy to share with you some of our feel good success stories of our adopted PAWS dogs here.  Be sure to check in here on our Kennel Diaries blog where we will be sharing the happiest rescue dogs guaranteed to make you feel good, something we all need at the moment we think!

Paddy was a retired ex racing greyhound surrendered to PAWS after his racing career had finished.  This is the case for many racing greyhounds when they are injured, haven’t been fast enough or deemed no longer useful to the racing industry.  Greyhounds are seldom seen as dogs that make good pets unfortunately in countries like Ireland, that have such a big racing industry, and this can sadly mean there is a constant stream of ex racers in need of forever homes with few homes wanting to adopt them.  Many ex racers are often adopted and moved overseas to loving homes in Sweden, Italy, Czech Republic etc where greyhound racing is banned and greyhounds are seen as these beautiful looking dogs that make great pets!  PAWS always has many greyhounds at the shelter in Mullinahone, Co Tipperary, looking for loving homes.  However, the average number of greyhounds adopted to Irish homes from PAWS are only about 1 or 2 a year, which can be so sad as they really do make fasntastic pets when given the chance.  This is due to their laid back personalities and their low activity needs (contrary to belief, greyhounds do not require a lot of exercise, often a quick run down the park or an on lead stroll is enough to have them wiped for a whole day.) Paddy was true to the typical greyhound character, happiest in bed, getting cuddles and the staff referred to him as a true gentleman.  Unfortunately, being a greyhound, it could still mean he could be waiting some time before being adopted.

However, for lucky Paddy, this was not the case as a lovely couple, interested in offering a great forever home to a PAWS dog, came to PAWS earlier this year and were interested in Paddy!  As he was booked for a home before we had to temporarily close to the public so last weekend we are delighted to report they were eager to come and collect him and settle him into his new home as a much loved and happy dog.  We could not be more delighted for our gentleman, Paddy, and we hope this is a great start to Spring 2020, albeit these are strange times, but it could be the year more greyhounds are adopted into loving homes!
